In Sønderborg, the construction of a massive new holiday resort has started. The project includes building 440 holiday homes on a 34,000 m² site and a 7,000 m² indoor water park.
The heating for the holiday homes and the water park will be supplied by an 8.3 MW heat pump at SONFOR Resort Heat, which is part of SONFOR. Verdo is responsible for the turnkey contract for the complete heat pump system. The installation also includes connection and control integration with the existing system. The heat pump system will be integrated with the existing straw boiler, thus increasing the plant's production capacity.

Heat pump functions

"At Verdo, we are pleased to contribute to the project as we can utilize many of our key competencies in pipe and metalwork, steel constructions, control integration, electrical installation, and construction in the project," says Mark Møller Lange, Sales Manager at Verdo Energy Systems.

The heat pump system comprises a 510 m² building with an 8.3 MW heat pump. In addition to the heat pump, the building houses a room prepared for integrating an electric boiler. Twenty outdoor air collectors will capture heat from the outside air and transfer it to ammonia via evaporators. The captured heat will then be stored in the 5,700 m³ accumulation tank using four high-pressure and low-pressure compressors and a condenser tower. To ensure adequate electrical capacity, a new transformer station will be installed within the heat pump system and connected to the existing transformer station at the straw boiler.

At SONFOR, the choice of a heat pump reflects the vision of continued fossil-free production, combined with the desire to expand the existing biomass production with electricity generation to enhance supply security and mitigate risk.

The first sod-turning for the construction of the heat pump plant was at the beginning of November, and the entire facility is anticipated to be ready for opening in March 2025.
